1991 Audi Coupe Quattro 20 Valve Crankcase Breather The original rubber "donkey dick" breather tube was deteriorated and soft - it felt a little like a ball of clay when I squeezed it. I installed an updated steel breather "kit" from Audi. Note: I paid less than dealer retail, and the parts must be ordered separately. Parts needed (total cost about US$155): 1-054103227A breather tube US$68.50 1-054103223A hose US$24.30 1-054103223 hose US$24.30 NOTE: both these hoses are VERY pricey buggers, but they have official Audi labels and they are an odd size. I chose to buy them rather than mess around with trying to locate cheaper substitutes locally. For those who want to try: Large hose: 1.15 inch ID Small hose: 0.65 inch ID 1-rubber cap (sorry, I have no part number) if you have NO small hose coming off the nipple 5 hose clamps (6 if you have a small hose coming off the nipple). 1- small piece of 5/16 fuel hose if you have a small hose coming off the nipple. The original rubber breather, tucked down below the hydraulic pump hoses and dipstick.
Access to the back clamps is made easier by removing the cruise control actuator, ground wires and various electrical plugs in the area. You will need to slide a 1/4 drive socket and extension under the distributor base to access the most recessed hose clamp. Some swearing helps.
The cruise control actuator lies nicely out of the way beside the battery (NOT on top please!) without disconnecting it from the throttle body.
The old and new breathers. The new one looks like something you could smoke....
The new breather installed looks much nicer, and it is more compact and visually satisfying than the rubber one.
My engine had a hose coming off to the rear - I used a piece of fuel hose to connect to the breather nipple.
